The Petersburg Alumnae Chapter
of
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated
Chapter History
Prior to the establishment of the Chapter in 1941, Soror Hermione Carter and many other charter members worked with, or served as sponsors of the Alpha Eta Chapter at Virginia State University (College). At the time of the chapter's chartering, Soror Marian Palmer Capps of Mu Sigma (now Norfolk Alumnae) was Eastern Regional Director. Her chapter, established in 1929, was the first chapter of Delta Sigma Theta in Virginia and in January, 1930 was responsible for establishing Alpha Eta. Soror Capps presided at the chartering ceremony and installed the first chapter officers of the Beta Gamma Sigma Chapter. They were: Hermione Carter-King (President), Marietta Cephas (Vice President), Edna M. Patrick (Corresponding Secretary), and Leo Roberts (Treasurer). The other charter members were:

The Petersburg Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was chartered in Ettrick, Virginia, on April 5, 1941, as the Beta Gamma Sigma Chapter. The name was changed to Petersburg Alumnae Chapter following a decision of the Twenty-Fourth National Convention of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, in 1956, on the renaming of graduate chapters.
Soror Hermione Carter, a Norfolk native, residing at Virginia State University (then Virginia State College for Negroes), is considered the initiator of the Chapter. She is thusly recognized because of her untiring, yet highly successful, efforts in 1940, directed at organizing the area's first alumnae chapter.
